Leipzig's Central Station was completed in 1915. With 26 platforms, it is the
largest terminal station and one of the largest passenger stations in Europe. It
is located right in the city centre.
With its long-distance connections, its IntercityExpress, Intercity, InterRegio, EuroCity and CityNightLine connections, the Station boasts good and rapid links in all directions. A rapid link to Leipzig/Halle Airport has been established with an Airport Express train.
With its Hauptbahnhof-Promenaden, Leipzig's Central Station is one of the most modern shopping and service centres in Germany. The centre covers about 30,000 m2 on three levels with about 140 shops. The station also has direct access facilities for cars with two multi-storey car parks.
Construction of Leipzig's City Tunnel began in 2003. The tunnel will be used for suburban, regional and long-distance connections, and will feature underground stations at the Central Station, the Market Square, Wilhelm Leuschner Platz, and the Bavarian Railway Station.
In addition to shortening travel times between the city centre, Airport and the Leipzig New Fair exhibition centre, the tunnel will speed up rail links with Chemnitz, Hof, Zwickau and Dresden, and improve connections between northern and southern Germany.
It is currently scheduled for completion in 2009.
